Switched Multi-megabit Data Service

Switched Multi-megabit Data Service
   (SMDS)
Bellcore's prototype network-based service that provides high levels of data throughput and network availability. SMDS is designed to take advantage of evolving MAN standards and technology that telephone companies can deploy to provide cross-premises communications services. With SMDS, a customer can send a packet of information over a dedicated interface operating initially at the DS3 rate (44.736M bps) to the nearest switching office equipped with a high-performance packet switch.
